Why a urologist built this.
LinkBox was not designed by a vendor guessing at the problem. It was built by a physician who kept losing evenings to it, in his own words below.
My name is Joe Littlejohn. I am a board-certified urologist, and I built LinkBox. I want you to know that up front, because in medicine who built the thing is half the decision. This was not designed in a boardroom by people who have never closed a chart at midnight.
The idea did not arrive as a business plan. It arrived on a Father's Day I spent on call, two twelve-hour days back to back, while the holiday went on at home without me. I was not behind because I saw too many patients. I was behind because the writing about the patients kept following me home. Every physician I know has a weekend like that one, and most of us have stopped expecting it to change.
Somewhere in that backlog I stopped seeing it as a workload problem and started seeing it as a design problem. The most valuable minutes in the building are spent transcribing a story the patient already knows by heart. The history of present illness, the backbone of the note, gets captured in the slowest and most expensive way we could possibly choose: live, by the most highly trained person in the room, while they are also trying to listen and make eye contact.
So I built the fix I wanted for myself. Let the patient tell their own story first, on the phone already in their pocket, before they ever sit on the exam table. Let that history arrive structured and waiting in the chart. Then I get to do the part only I can do, which is examine, decide, and treat, instead of typing.
Happier doctors make for happier patients.
I still believe that line, and I believe the reverse of it is what is quietly hollowing out the profession. If we want physicians who are present with their patients and home with their families, the work that follows them home is the honest place to start. That is the whole reason LinkBox exists, and it is why I put my name on it.
